OTOPLASTY

Otoplasty is a surgical procedure to correct the shape, size, or position of the ears. It is commonly performed to address protruding or asymmetrical ears that may be a source of self-consciousness or embarrassment.

The procedure is typically performed on children between the ages of 4 and 14, but it can also be done on adults. The surgery is performed under local anesthesia or general anesthesia, depending on the age of the patient and the extent of the procedure.

The surgery involves making small incisions behind the ear to expose the cartilage. The surgeon may then remove or reshape the cartilage to create a more natural-looking ear shape. The ear may also be repositioned closer to the head if it is protruding.

The surgeon will then close the incisions with sutures and apply a bandage to protect the ears. The procedure usually takes about 1-2 hours to complete.

After the surgery, the patient will need to wear a protective headband for several weeks to help support the new shape of the ear and prevent trauma. Pain and discomfort are typically minimal, and any swelling or bruising should subside within a few weeks.

The results of otoplasty are usually long-lasting and can have a significant impact on the patient’s self-esteem and confidence.
