Reconstructive Surgery
Reconstructive surgery is a form of plastic surgery that restores the appearance, shape, and function of damaged or disfigured parts of the body.It can correct facial and body abnormalities caused by birth defects, injury, disease, aging, etc. The goal of reconstructive plastic surgery is usually to improve the function of the body.
Reconstructive surgery is different from aesthetic (often referred to as “cosmetic”) plastic surgery, which primarily aims to change the appearance of a selected person.Contact Desire Aesthetics, one of the best reconstructive surgery hospitals in Chennai, headed by renowned plastic surgeon in Chennai, Dr. A. What do you mean by Reconstructive Surgery?
The core of a plastic surgeon’s work is reconstructive surgery. Reconstructive surgery is used to treat a variety of conditions, from head to toe, from newborns to the elderly. It’s about repairing people and restoring function. This is done to repair and reshape body structures affected by birth defects, developmental disorders, trauma/injuries, infections, tumors, and diseases.
Plastic surgeons use a wide range of reconstructive techniques to close holes and repair damage, primarily by grafting tissue from one part of the body to another. Its main purpose is to restore the normal state of the body or the function of certain parts of the body.
However, plastic surgeons who perform reconstructive surgery also strive to improve and restore appearance. Whenever possible, we strive to minimize the visual impact of the original scar or defect, as well as the impact of the surgery itself. Cosmetic surgery is an extension of reconstructive surgery, and the main expected functional benefit is improved appearance.
The main techniques that plastic surgeons use in reconstructive surgery are –
- Skin Grafting – It involves taking a patch of healthy skin from one area of the body, called the donor site, and using it to cover another area where the skin is being grafted. The transferred skin piece is completely separated and requires vascular ingrowth when placed at the recipient site.
- Flap Surgery– Flap reconstruction involves transplanting a piece of living tissue from one part of the body to another, along with blood vessels to sustain it. Unlike skin grafts, flaps have their own blood supply and can be used to repair more complex defects. Flap surgery can restore shape and function to some areas of the body that have lost skin, fat, muscle movement, and/or skeletal support.
- There are several different techniques used to perform cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery procedures, including the following:
- Endoscopic surgery
- Flap surgery
- Laser surgery
- Skin graft
- Tissue expansion – Tissue expansion is a procedure in which the body “grows” additional skin by stretching the surrounding tissue. A balloon-like device called an expander is put under the skin around the area to be repaired and gradually filled with salt water, causing the skin to stretch and grow. The duration of tissue expansion depends on the individual case and the size of the area to be repaired.
