Five Reasons Why You Should Try Dry Brushing

Among the countless self-care routines out there, dry brushing is one of the simplest and effective self-care cum skin-care routine. Dry brushing as a self-care practise has been there for centuries, in ayurveda and in many cultures. NOw people all over the world are discovering dry brushing as an effective routine to follow.

How does one do dry brushing?

First of all, find a gentle, firm, preferably a natural-bristled brush with a long handle, which will allow you to reach your entire back and easily brush the bottoms of your feet and the backs of your legs. 

 

Gently but firmly brush your skin in long strokes towards your heart, going over each area two or three times, preferably with a long handled natural-bristle brush. At your belly, brush in clockwise motion. 

Tips for a better and more effective dry brushing routine:

 

  • Start at your feet and move up your body. Always brush in wide, circular, clockwise motions.
  • Take care of the pressure you apply. Wherever your skin is thin, use light pressure and use harder pressure on thicker skin, like the soles of your feet.
  • After dry brushing, take a cool shower to help remove the dry skin.
  • After your shower, dry off and then consider adding natural oil, such as olive or coconut oil or any vitamin-rich moisturizer to moisturize your skin.
  • You can do it almost daily depending on the sensitivity of your skin!

 

What does dry brushing do?

 

Anecdotally dry brushing is supposed to have many helpful benefits including stimulation of lymphatic system helping the normal lymph flow and detoxify the body. Dry brushing when done regularly is even said to reduce cellulite. 

 

But the following are the benefits of dry brushing confirmed by a number of people who follow the practice regularly!

  • Cleansing of even smaller pores in the skin
  • Improves circulation

Dry brushing enhances skin radiance and light reflection so the skin looks brighter! It brings out the glow that was naturally inside you!

2. Dry body brushing doesn’t affect the moisture of your skin!

Dry brushing removes the dead skin cells off the surface of your skin without affecting the natural moisture of your skin, unlike other scrubbing methods!

3. Dry brushing allows the skin to more effectively absorb moisturizers!

Having removed the unnecessary layer of dead cells, it makes way for your skin to effectively absorb moisturizers and their nutrients. Over time, this makes your skin healthy and supple, bringing out the glow even more!

4. Dry brushing improves circulation!

Though it is said that dry brushing stimulates lymphatic circulation, lymphatic system is actually deep under the skin. It hasn’t been scientifically proven that dry brushing helps lymphatic circulation, but people have claimed to have noticed better immunity after regular dry brushing. Maybe it’s all the clarity, stress relief and happy feeling that better, shiny, healthy skin gives, that translates to better immunity. We can all see the results for ourselves from our experiences until some scientific study definitively proves yay and no.

That’s why many proponents of dry brushing prefer to follow their routine in the mornings, to give a boost to their day!
